Paestum is one of the most important and fascinating archeological site in the world.
It was first a Greek city, then a Roman Colony.
Forgotten for many Centuries Paestum has only been rediscovered in the XVI century. The main features of the site are the standing remains of three Doric style temples of the first half of the 6th century BC. They were built in honour of Hera and Athena, although they have traditionally been identified as a basilica and temples of Neptune and Ceres. The city is surrounded by defensive walls that still stand.
Paestum is also renowned for its painted tombs that mainly belong to the period of the Lucanian rule, while only one of them is from the Greek period. All of its Greek frescoes are visible in the Archeological National Museum of Paestum, together with the of the Lucanian painted tombs including the famous and unique “Tomb of the Diver”.
