Discover the divine Amalfi Coast along a road built in 1840 and that has breathtaking views of the steep rugged coastline at every bend.
The driving tour is a highlight of the Coastline and includes the visit to Ravello including the amazing Villa Rufolo and its gardens, dating back to the 11th century (also mentioned by Boccaccio in his “Decamerone”) and Villa Cimbrone. Then a visit to Amalfi including the cathedral of St. Andrew that holds the remains of the Apostle (its oriental facade encloses a lombard-romanique interior and bronze doors fused in Constantinople in 1067).
Along the Coast enjoy the breath taking view and admire Capri Island and Positano. Positano is a fishermen town of steps and arched passageways. It is a vertical village with countless terraced lemon, fruit and flowered gardens and spectacular villas and houses that lead to the beach protected by the Saracen watch tower (Remnants of past dramatic incursions of Saracens and Turks). You will then reach the panorama points of Sorrento and from the high cliffs of tufa stone enjoy the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Coast.

Coming from the beautiful city of Salerno that is one of the most liveable Cities in Italy, you will see Vietri sul Mare, a famous place for its colourful ceramic ware and a tradition dating back to the 15th century. Passing over the Punta di Fuenti, where the remains of a Roman quay lie below the surface, you will come across the beach of Cetara that an ancient Saracen stronghold (its name deriving from the Latin word Cetariae “tunny fisheries”). Then you will see the beach of Marina di Erchie with the tower and Capo d’Orso (A black rock with the bear shape).
Maiori is a very popular place for families because it has the largest beaches of the Amalfi Coast and just behind it there is the charming little town of Minori. The main road goes to Atrani which is a place where the nobility of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi had their residence and where dogs were crowned and buried.
After that you will see Ravello which is a must with its magical atmosphere. The garden of Villa Rufolo of Ravello inspired Richard Wagner while he was composing Parsifal.
Amalfi which is the oldest of the four Maritime Republics, with its may bathing establishments such as Lido Azzurro, Marina Grande and Lido delle Sirene has still the same charm.
You can visit the Cathedral of Amalfi with its many panoramic views such as the natural balconies of Agerola and then keep going to the painted village, Furore. Here artists from different countries come to a festival in September to add murals on local buildings. Then more to Conca dei Marini, once an important trading centre and just beyond it a forecourt from where a lift takes you down to the impressive Emerald Grotto. Positano that is the gem of the seaside tourism with its colourful and pastel houses. Its streets are full of boutiques that have made the Positano style famous all over the world.
You will find many beaches and just off the coast the Li Galli islands (three little islands): il Gallo Lungo, la Rotonda and il Castelluccio which was the home of the sirens who wooed Ulysses. The coast road ends at Sant’Agata sui due Golfi which marks the line between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrentine Peninsula.
Sorrento is a truly spectacular spot even for the coastline with its towering cliff in volcanic tuff. There are private beaches near the port and many good restaurants. Sorrento is a beautiful landscape with high-level artistic and gastronomic attractions, as well as fine hotels, charming guest houses and more. The Bath of Queen Joan for instance, with a natural rock arch that encloses a natural pool of sea water. The waterside ruins that you can find there are thought to be those of the villa of Vedius Pollio who was a rich Roman aristocrat, but the legend has it that it was here that Joan (Queen of Anjou) would keep trysts with her lovers. Travel the Amalfi Coast and Sorrentine Peninsula and make your stay in Italy a unique experience! As this is a foretaste of paradise, every view remains imprinted in visitors’ hearts and mind.
